Renting out RTB home

I agree but I was replying to the previous poster who said the RTB scheme was making the housing shortage worse when in fact it isn't. They could stop people renting their properties out which would stop .00000001% of RTB owners renting out their houses.
Just to !!!! people off even more I know of 3 couples who had the RTB , bought their houses, had them repossessed ,are now back in HA properties and will get the RTB those houses under the Govt RTB scheme that extends to HA homes. Now that should be clamped down on .Even with a lifelong tenancy, people sometimes move on if they wish to or their circumstances change, and if they don't then they die or go into care in time and the house goes to somebody else.
Agreed...................... Many people will stay in their HA,Council house for their entire lives so their house will be passed onto the next tenant in 50yrs time by which time if we haven't built affordable homes then we really be up sh*t creek.
To carry on relying on developers (Private companies) to build the number of houses we need is just plain stupid. They have massive land banks and could increase volumes by 50% but if they did that prices would drop and they don't want that so they trickle developments onto the market to restrict supply which keeps profits high..
The UK needs a massive Social House building programme ,built by the Govt and not private companies. Stop paying farmers £millions for their land , pay them the going price for arable, pasture land and just build affordable homes and take the word "profit" out of the equation.0 -
Nearly 2 million council houses have been lost to RTB since it started.
How can you possibly believe that hasn't contributed to the current housing crisis?0 -

Please quote me where I said it hadn't contributed to the housing shortage.
By the way we have roughly around 300,000 extra people moving to the UK every year so thats around 3,000,000 people in a decade which has/is having more impact on housing than the RTB scheme.
The RTB scheme started in 1980 so thats roughly 55,000 RTB houses sold each year but 300,000 extra people moving here a year has more impact on housing and the fact that we aren't building houses and especially affordable houses is the real problem. Those 2m sold RTB houses are still there with people living in them so the main problem is increased population and lack of developing.0 -
I remember that some 30 years ago our council actually advertised for people willing to rent, as it had lots of empty flats and two bedroomed houses (admittedly in less desirable areas). Now they can't even upgrade a family of five with two boys and a girl, living in a small 2 bed house.0

BR BBM
You didn't at all. No apology needed.
I just find scenarios like this utterly depressing and frankly plain wrong.0 -

In my opinion you're giving up a safe place for your family, including a very young child, and risking getting yourself into severe financial difficulty for the sake of an extra bedroom. Of course the place you live in is cramped......but it is your place. Surely you move things around a bit to make things work? There must be thousands of people with only one bedroom in your situation.
I would stay put until you have at least fulfilled your obligations under the RTB contract. What you need is a different outlook on life, not somewhere bigger to live. Count your blessings.I came into this world with nothing and I've got most of it left.0 -
Sorry, for very young child read newborn baby.I came into this world with nothing and I've got most of it left.0

Well that was expected, although unnecessary.
I was asking for mortgage advice about my current RTB mortgage with Halifax. I wasn't asking for moral judgements about my life decisions.
I'm not going to apologise for something I'm not sorry for. I've done what I'm legally allowed to do to advantage myself/my family. By doing this I've hopefully removed myself and my family from social housing forever - something which would not have been possible without the RTB scheme.
Yes, I could sell back to the council/repay the discount. Do you think the council would use that repayment to house someone else? Would they even buy the flat back? I do think that the government should be building a new property for every one they sell off. But they don't - and that's not my decision.
I could stay put in the flat for 3 years until discount repayment period has ended. Would that make anyone who is anti RTB any happier? I doubt it. And I don't want to live in a 1 bed flat with a child for the next three years, and as I don't have to I'm not going to.
And anyway....The block where I live has approx. 50% of flats still owned by the council, at least half of those are empty most of the time or occupied by someone other than the intended tenant. Is that better than RTB?0
