Advent PC / Win 10 / Not Resetting

The story ...

BIL has an Advent small form factor PC (can't remember the model number) with a 1TB drive. Last time I saw it, it had Windows 7 ... now it looks like it's been updated to Windows 10.

After power on, the Windows logo appears with the swirly dots. Then the logo disappears but the swirly dots remain for a little while. Then the screen goes black, but if you move the mouse you can see the pointer. The PC remains in this state no matter how long you leave it.

As he hadn't made any data backups for such a long time (fool - this isn't the first time his PC has crashed; I've had to rescue it before when it had Windows 7) I used a Linux live disc to access the PC and backup his data/photos etc. to a USB drive. (I had to use ntfsfix in Terminal to allow Linux to access the PC's drive).

I then used a Windows 10 Home 64-bit DVD I had created a while ago to try and recover his PC. System Repair did nothing, Reset PC saving data didn't work, so I finally tried Reset PC (to basically reinstall Windows). This started last night, got to 2% complete and I went to bed leaving it running. I got up this morning - still says 2% complete. I've left it running but I won't be surprised if it still says 2% when I get home tonight.

Suggestions please?

It was still stick at 2%, so I've restarted and am doing a fresh install. :)

Did you do a full re-format? If not may be worth doing a full chkdsk to ensure that the 1TB drive hasn't gone done (and/or run HD Sentinel).

Too late to help the OP, but sometimes I've used Ctrl-Alt-Delete to get out of the state where the mouse moves but nothing else is visible.
If that doesn't work, holding down the power button for several seconds to make it do a 'full' shutdown (because Windows 10's default Shutdown is only a form of hibernation) has worked for me before.
