wirelesss connection help!!!

hi all,

can anyone tell me how to check if a laptop has a built in wireless card.

I brought a dell insiron 1501 from a carboot sale and have tried my old wirless card but this does not fit (too big). The laptop does say wifi on it but i'm not sure if that means wireless built in or not.

Thanks.

  • Have a look in device manager under network devices, it should tell you if you have a wireless adapter built in. Typically you should have two entries one for an ethernet port and one for wireless.

Mind you if it says wifi on it I'd be surprised if it doesn't.

  • ok ive looked in device manager and under network adapters it says
    broadcam 440x 10/100 intergrated controler
    broadcom 802.11g network adapter

Does this mean it is wireless then? if it does any ideas why i cannot connect to the internet?. It does work with a ethernet cable!
  • Have you set up a wireless network? Windows xp has a wizard to set one up. Is there a firewall blocking connections? Is your wireless router set up properly?

Yep, you have wireless. Do you already have a wireless router? If so did you set up security on it before, if you set up a WEP or WPA key on it you will need to set up a connection on the new laptop and enter the key. Also if you set up MAC address filtering you will need to add the MAC of your new laptop.

    Download the manual from here.

Fn + F2 for the wireless.
