I suspect it's an alternator problem.
I think he is planning to Solar charge it in winter. When you look into an abyss, the abyss also looks into you. Nietzsche
Please note that at no point during this work was the kettle ever put out of commission and no chavs were harmed during the making of this post.0 -
Try plugging a phone charger or something in with the ignition off - this will tell you if it's live all the time. I used this to test my Rover 45 that gets very little use for the very same reason. I don't mind getting under the bonnet so I use a cut off on the battery terminal.
It's not actually that difficult or costly to buy an extra cigarette lighter socket and wire it to the battery if it turns out it's not live all the time0 -

martin- we have put that to mum, but she is unwilling to go down that route yet.
To be fair, she does live in a very rural area, where there are very few taxis, and getting one when you want one can be difficult.
When her car finally dies I doubt it will be replaced, but until that time she still wants to trundle out under her own steam.
And before anyone mentions it ... We do go out with her driving every now and then, to make sure she is still competent. We will stop her as soon as we have any doubts about her ability to be safe.I try not to get too stressed out on the forum. I won't argue, i'll just leave a thread if you don't like what I say.0 -

Yes flash, plugging a phone in to test it is exactly what I plan to do when I can next get there. Mum doesn't have a car charger of her own.
Thanks for the tip about an extra socket.I try not to get too stressed out on the forum. I won't argue, i'll just leave a thread if you don't like what I say.0
