Should I use PCmover?

I'm having a real 'mare try to move files/settings from desktop win7 to my new desktop win10.
Would it be easier to use pcmover or another software,it's needs to be foolproof.
I've tried backup to portable HD but can't seem to install it on windows 10 desktop,I'm not use to windows 10.
Also finding the migrate to thunderbird useless so if I can move everything I'd be grateful.
Thanks

backup will want to restore to the location it came from, maybe the issue.

Simply copy the files to a folder on the drive and then copy them to the new pc.

Phew, just manage to migrate the thunderbird settings using mozbackup(many thanks J B xxx) Been trying for 2days so great relief.

I'm wanting to move/copy all my files/settings & if possible my desktop shortcuts. In a nutshell, everything.
Was thinking of just moving the old HD into the new machine & $od win10. Is that possible?

Forgotmyname might be right, backup from the portable HD isn't working.

Don't suppose I can downgrade to win7 on the new desktop?

Not if win 10 was pre-installed. You can get a windows 7 install disc and use your old serial.

But how far down the line will it be before win 7 becomes obsolete? I have rolled a few upgrades back to 7, but i have also installed classic shell for a few others and they are happy with the compromise.

It will take half the amount of time to create a new shortcut than copy an old one and transfer it over.

I detest software that copies files from one medium to another. Dad uses picasa to transfer photo's from phones to PC. But he doesnt know where they are or which folder the are icons and which are full sized pictures.

I keep telling him it takes half the time to simply plug the phone in and right click /copy on the camera folder and then paste to the desktop and then repeat to the D drive as a backup.

He wont do that so has no backup if the drive fails. Got an empty drive sitting there unused that is supposed to be his safety net for the photo's.
    LOTS and LOTS of photo's.

MIL takes tons of pictures every day, not so bad except half have fingers over the lens and upside down etc etc..

Copy/paste the files/folders you're interested in to the portable from the old machine, plug into new machine and copy/paste from portable to new

Or connect both machines to your network/router and copy them directly over the network....

How many 'desktop shortcuts' do you have? Is there a reason you can't just find the programs you want to shortcut to on the new machine, right-click and 'creat shortcut' ?

Stop using single button solutions and just copy/paste your files from the old PC to the external drive and then from the external drive to the new PC.

This is the problem with newer OSs, people are mollycoddled, they don't even learn how to do basic file operations anymore and Windows (8 and onwards) doesn't help by hiding everything.

I remember trying to access the specs of a Win8 laptop once, took me 2 bloody hours, a lot of Google searching, watching videos on YT and a lot of swearing to figure out where the basic computer properties were. In the end I downloaded a 3rd party program to make Win8 look like Win7 and I swore never to touch a Win8 PC again, I even told family that if they ever bought Win8 PCs/laptops NOT to ask me for help fixing them.
I understand that Win10 is a lot better, but i'm still using Win7 regardless.

Great replies guys. Comforting knowing I'm not a complete air-head.
My desktop has a full screen of shortcuts!Always believing that they are too important to clean-up.
Like the idea of win7 lookalike,is there a link?
With FMYN's dad,I transfered(I think) photos/vids across, they seem to have found the Bermuda Triangle.
Did try network thing. Still can't find them on win10 PC. Think I've most likely got triplets of same file on that new PC.
I have managed to get Firefox okay by using their "Sync" thingy.
