Sounds like your expansion vessel is ineffective and either needs replacing or simply re-pressurising.
Thanks for your advice - can you tell me whether this is something I can tackle myself and where to find the expansion vessel? (I can just about bleed a radiator or open the valve!) Also is it something which may cause later problems eg leaking or can I carry on until I can find a plumber? If you reply tomorrow I'll be able to do something on the advice recd. Thanks.

Having re-read the thread I now agree with Rubidium-it's probably a fault with the EV, which is a straightforward job for an RGI (not for a plumber).
OP, this does not seem to be a job which you are capable of doing yourself.

Sorry I could not reply earlier. I have now found that when running the hot water tap (when the heating is off) the boiler leaks. The green area is the area between 0.7 and 0.10 and it's where the needle rests when the heating is off. I have now turned the heating on and the needle is moving upwards from the green area. After 30 minutes it has reached just below 1.10. I've just run the tap for about 5 mins and the needle hasn't moved below 1.10. (The boiler is silent as the temperature has reached 21degrees so it has shut off I suppose; and the needle is now in the green zone.) I've known the needle to reach 2.5 but that is after I've been showering. I was told by the guy (after he did the power flush in September 2015) that it was OK for the needle to go up to 2.5!

Can you tell me what these readings and the boiler having leaked now indicate. Can I carry on with the boiler as presently or will it ultimately fail altogether?

By RGI do you mean a registered gas ...person?
  • Further to my earlier post as I said when I run the hot water tap with the heating off, the boiler leaks. When showering (and the heating is on) the water runs cool for a few minutes but the needle doesn't go too far above the bar 1.10.

Does this indicate the expansion vessel needs replacing? I need to be able to speak confidently when I find an RGI (is that a Registered Gas person?) to come and do the job.
