Can DWP demand statements if NOT on MTB?

Hey folks, Long story short... my wife and I who had worked all our adult lives (5+ decades between us) are now unemployed due to severe illness (both of us). I have had to become my wife's full-time carer and am her appointee with the DWP etc. Neither of us receive any means-tested benefits, although about two years ago…

Can the DWP demand to see our financial information when we do not receive any means-tested benefits?

It seems to me irrelevant whether or not the benefits are means tested - the fact is that you are in receipt of benefits and therefore the DWP are entitled to ask for any information that they require?
