Internet Connection

I have moved house and presently can't find a way to run a cable out of sight from the router to my PC .
In the meantime could anyone please tell me would it be better to get a wireless card or to go for a usb device ? Also which type would you buy?
Forgotten but not gone.

For a temporary fix, go with USB. I'm sure Netgear/Belkin/etc will do one that's easy to install.

Running Cat5 is obviously better in the long term (not affected by idiotic neighbours WiFi), just lift the edge of your carpets up and run it around the room.

Have you considered Powerline (aka homeplug) adapters. Latest spec ones can give near ethernet speeds, are neater but not as cheap.

How far away is the router from your PC? I live in a bungalow and run a CAT6 25Meter cable across the loft, two rooms away to my desktop. It's important to realise that, if your router is putting out Gigabit ethernet, the only way to get the maximum 1Gb/second at the PC, is to run a Cat 6 cable to it. Not even the most powerful wireless extender, or powerline adapter, will give you that. I tried one of these:

    - and could only receive 144 Mbps speeds.

If you live in a two storey house, is it possible to run a cable between PC and router?

If your router only puts out 10/100 ("Fast Ethernet") then it won't matter, but you will still not receive 'near ethernet speeds' from any wireless extender or powerline adapter. In practice, it just does not happen. Powerline adapters are subject to the condition of your house wiring and Range Extenders are subject to whatever is between the router and the PC: walls of brick are a particular problem. All such devices can also be affected by interference from other electrical or electronic sources.
I think this job really needs
    a much bigger hammer.

Unless the OP's internet speed is over 100Mbps or the OP has other devices hard wired to the router then that wont matter will it.
