Question about connecting flights

If someone books a flight which flight has one changeover in another country, what happens if the first flight is delayed and the second is then missed. Is it up to the passenger to then find the money for the ongoing part of the flight?

In the case in question there is a 2 hour change over period but the first leg of the flight is 9 hours and given past experience its not unusual to land 2 hours or more late.

If it is all on one ticket (one reference number) then you are OK as it is up to the airline to get you to the destination.

If you have bought two separate tickets then you are (usually) on your own re the second missed flight.

Even if the flight isn't two hours late, remember - transit to another flight takes at best quite a few minutes .... If the connecting flight is with the same airline and was booked as a through ticket, I would think that the airline has a responsibility to give you a seat on the next available flight.

Something similar happened to us a few years ago with Lufthansa - they held the connecting flight for us (we literally had to run to the plane), but our luggage followed the next day because they didn't have time to load it.

We had this happened on a flight to New Zealand with Singapore Airlines. Our Heathrow departure was delayed 5 hours so we missed our connection in Chiangi (Singapore). The airline took us to a hotel in the city, gave us a meal and arranged a coach back to get the next flight. As we had through tickets this was all arranged.

I was also able to telephone our airport hotel in Auckland, as I had a flexible booking, and cancelled in time not to be charged. The only problem was that we arrived at 9 am (not 11 pm) missing a night's sleep.

    OP.

It helps if you could name the airline, and details of the flights.
