Liners for kitchen compost bin: depending on the size, I use empty flour or oats paper bags to line the small compost bin on the worktop - make a few downward cuts round the top so that you can fold it over the rim. The whole thing gets emptied into the compost bin which also helps with the peelings/ paper (green/ brown) ratio. For my general waste bin under the sink, which is still quite small, I use newspaper to line it. I was doubtful whether it would get soggy or leak but thought I would give it a try and it's fine. I use three pages, overlapping round the sides and fold a fourth page up and put it in the bottom. I just empty the whole thing into the dustbin so no more plastic bin bags.

If you are looking for wipes try searching for fleece nappy wipes, or just buy a large fleece (or get one second hand).

You can then make a soap solution with about one part baby shampoo with ten parts water, put into a foaming soap dispenser. You can get one if you are in a hospital, or know someone who works there, because they use them to dispense alcohol foam.

The fleece wipes last forever (we used them on 1st and now 2nd child) as does the soap because the foaming dispenser makes it go a long way. Just need to put them in the washing machine and they come out clean and almost dry. Plus, they work much better than wet wipes.

We use them for everything now - nappies, faces, and cleaning where we would have used a disposable cloth.

Is anyone stockpiling anything "just in case" the proverbial hits the fan after Brexit? I'm thinking about buying in stuff that can't be made/grown in the UK - coffee/tea, dried pulses, rice, quinoa, nuts, peanut butter (I've just bought 5kg from my local food club :rotfl:).

Nearly time to start with the tomato seeds - I haven't tidied up the veggie patch from last year yet, but I saw a blackbird & bluetit gathering bits of dried stems for their nests so that's a good excuse to leave it a bit longer, I reckon!

    Happy weekend everyone!

Ah yes was considering things that are from other countries too, even with trade deals etc, I think the supply chain will experience a blip somewhere :(

  • As I buy everything in bulk anyway, I haven't really considered anything additional 'just in case'. I probably have enough food and household stuff in my house to see me through the next 9 months really :rotfl:

Living in a rural area with lots of farm shops/roadside stalls etc and having enough space to grow my own means that fresh fruit and veg shouldn't be an issue either - even if supply chains are affected (got to admit that I'm not convinced that any problems will occur) I can easily substitute stuff with more easily accessible things ;)

The only thing that I am changing is growing more of my own stuff this year than I originally intended to do - I'm going to have my garden re-done next year so I had sort of decided not to do very much this year - but with the possibility of people 'panic buying' having less reason to go out seems appropriate!

The only class of goods that might be affected by Brexit are those coming from elsewhere in the EU. That doesn't include tea or coffee !

Moreover, when we're outside the EU, prices of imported (from rest of world outside EU) foodstuffs are more likely to fall than rise as we should stop having to pay the 'external tariffs' imposed on foods. And if some prices of imports from the EU should rise, most of them can be substituted with UK or non-EU stuff.

Talks of impending shortages are just part of 'project fear' but if enough people believe that, suppliers will jump on bandwagon and charge more anyway.

Interesting. There's a lot of conflicting info out there, & yes, no doubt media-induced fearmongering. Best to concentrate on tins of Italian chopped tomates & EU-grown soya beans, then!

I still think there will be blips in supply of various things....just no idea what so you can't really cover it. Am thinking of just getting my favourites, already been thinking of growing stuff, IF I can stop the dogs eating or digging it all up :(:(

  • It's possible there will be savvy but even if there is i can't see it being a prolonged period...living in a capitalist system as the fourth largest economy suggests that it will be sorted very quickly once a decision is made imho ;)

Have you thought of putting fencing around a veggie patch/bed/pots? When I first did veggies I just put some bamboo canes in the ground and wrapped chicken wire around them to keep the dogs off...it wasn't the most stable of structures and didn't look pretty but it did the job! ;):D
  • I finally managed to get my seeds sown a few weeks ago...now I have triffids in my kitchen!! :rotfl:

Hopefully this weekend I will be able to sort the veg box and plant them out before they start to take over my house completely ;)

I'm trying to put off another suma order for a month or so - the less I spend the better at the moment- so the next few weeks will be using up what I currently have and making some strange substitutions!

House is coming on well now - we have ordered the spindles for the staircase so will hopefully have that all done over the easter break and other than the carpets and doors, everything should be completed by the end of this month!! :j

I have decided that once the house is done and the mortgage finished (hopefully 6 months from now) I really need to restock my wardrobe..I just need to find the most ethical clothing suppliers now so it looks like I'll need to do plenty of research ;)
