you are welcome to ask, but they are not a legal requirement so could be refused.

as above, also a very trivial thing over which to be delaying the purchase of a house. I have my own set of rods and sweep my own chimney so if you asked me for a certificate I would show you a bag of soot instead !
  • thank you for that I wasn't sure

You're quite right to do this.

I refuse to allow work to proceed unless i see a copy of their birth certificate proving they're at least 4 years old....

but for practical reasons they also have to be under 8 to fit up the chimney.

I have to admit I was somewhat shocked the first time I had the flue of my wood burner swept to be given a "Certificate of Chimney Sweeping"! :rotfl: Whatever nonsense will they think up next I wonder ? Certificates for lawn mowing or hedge cutting from gardeners? just something else to add to the ever increasing pile of useless paperwork!

For info, it costs about £50 to have a chimney swept, or you can buy your own brushes for less and do it as often as you like.
(I've never heard of a certificate - perhaps they are only issued if the sweep is qualified to degree level in Pointless Chimney Sweep Administration?)
