Car ownership date

So I've had my car since 2008 but it was registered in my dads name at the time as he bought it for me. Insurance etc has always been under my name.

Last year I transferred ownership of the car name to my own finally. But now its time for renewal quotes, and the premiums are £100+ as the ownership date is so recent.

This is definitely a stupid question but I'd like clarification - I must use the date the DVLA have of me owning the car right, I can't use the 2008 date anymore? Cheers!

The V5 does not prove ownership, it shows the person responsible for taxing the vehicle.

Just because the V5 has only just changed, does not mean you have not owned it since 2008.

But there is no proof of registered ownership under my name until last year. If there is a claim and the insurers check, surely they'll just point this out and say the policy is invalid?

The rk is not necessarily the "owner".

As has been the case since 2008 till now!!

But without a 'paper trail' how can you show you aren't just making up an older ownership date to get a cheaper premium? You leave yourself open to the insurance company coming back and refusing a claim as you can't prove ownership.

This is my worry. I have been driving the car as my own since 2008 but officially its only been mine since last year. I may have to bite the bullet and pay the extra premium unless someone can tell me otherwise. I'm pretty sure when it comes to claims, insurers will only look at the black and white!

You do have a paper trail don't you.

You say you have insured as owner since 2008 (your dad as rk)??
