Fixed Penalty - Driving without insurance

I know it was stupid to drive without insurance . though unknowingly I took my mums car for an MOT after repairing it , on the way back from the MOT centre a copper pulled me and prosecuted me for driving without insurance - despite me telling him I had my own car and was not aware of my mums car insurance running out
A month later I got the Fixed penalty notice of £300 and six penalty points , however I do not have £300 spare - isn't there a way to arrange installments
Is it worth me contesting on the grounds of not being aware of the car being uninsured , or should I just accept it , get another loan and pay it off
My licence is has otherwise been clean for over 10 years

As we tend to major on private parking tickets here, PePiPoo will be your best bet for Police penalty tickets. Register there (but please note that a hotmail address won't work) and post a new thread; here's your link:
http://forums.pepipoo.com/index.php?act=SF&s=&f=5
Have a read through some of the other threads there before you post your own to get the hang of what information they need from you in your opening post - but as a minimum you will need to post redacted photos/scans of all correspondence you've received (both sides, if appropriate) as they need to see all the small print.
Good luck. Please note, we are not a legal advice forum. I personally don't get involved in critiquing court case Defences/Witness Statements, so unable to help on that front. Please don't ask. .
I provide only my personal opinion, it is not a legal opinion, it is simply a personal one. I am not a lawyer.

Have you been to a solicitors? It may be worth a try? A similar thing happened to my sister, a magistrate as it happens. She assumed her husband had renewed the car insurance, but he'd forgotten. Although driving without insurance is an "absolute offence" - so she told me, and whatever that means - she was able to get an absolute discharge under the circumstances of not knowing about the insurance cover, or lack of it. In other words, she was let off with a warning in the magistrates court. So speak to a solicitor if it isn't too late.0

the only way to get instalments is to go to court , however they will add court costs on as well
you now have 6 penalty points and a very nasty endorsement code to contend withSave a Rachael

Hmm I am pretty skeptical , I can see the courts being slightly biased with a magistrate - no offence0 -
