Paypal WARNING???

Hi all,
I just ended my 1st call to Paypal Credit on my current landline. The call involved automated confirmation of my landline number and sounded like the call centre was in India or far east.
20 seconds later, I get a call from a male, not so distant sounding, but a real foreign accent, but good English. He said he was calling from 'The Accident Investigation Service' and continued by stating the areas of damage to my car.
Funny thing is.... I told him I DON'T HAVE A CAR!...which is true
He said 'oh' And I quickly replied OH! Then I rushed him saying 'time to say goodbye' and slammed the phone down, hehe!:j
QUESTION IS....is it possible someone has obtained my number from Paypal or are listening in somehow? Paypal just gave me 1k in credit and I really don't want it being scammed....or am I just worrying too much?

Coincidence. We don't have a paypal account, but get these "I'm calling about your car accident" calls.

Easily dealt with - if I have the time and the inclination, a good wind-up is to keep asking "which accident?" in reply to every question.

You might also be random called about a fault with your PC.

My mother tells them she doesn't own one, which is true. They can't test whether another person saying this would be lying.

You're better not to engage as any information you give them is likely to be kept and used to try to get more from you next time.

It's sometimes too tempting for me to avoid though.

My response to the PC fault is which one? When they ask what do you mean? I say - Well I'm running a network of 16 computers, which one has the fault?

I tend to ask the PC guy how much he knows about Algol 60 - stops them dead.

I do get fed up with the automatic systems calling about new boilers - I tend to let them all talk to the answer machine - anyone important will leave a message and I can get back to them.

Don't know about 'funny thing', but I do find it odd that, after realising it was clearly a scammer, you still answered his questions and gave him information. You probably even confirmed your name?

Tell them nothing, just hang up.
  • Other than just saying 'hello' when I answer the phone, any calls I receive like those mentioned aqbove and I speak in Welsh (my 'mother' tongue). It confuses the hell out of them and they hang up!

Did PayPal increase your limit or is that what you got when you applied for it? When I rang to increase my credit they told me that they wouldn't be able to do any bodies in the uk until end of year :o
