Help me to avoid the jams. We need to do the above journey this Friday, leaving Worthing late afternoon.
My DD says the M3 and M4 will be at a standstill when we want to travel!
Looking at avoiding them isn't easy so your ideas on a traffic free route appreciated.

Google AA route finder (free) and put in you start point and destination, making sure you tick the 'avoid motorways' box.I used to think that good grammar is important, but now I know that good wine is importanter.0

Yes I have already done this but the route seems to double back on its self several times.0

Try google maps at rush hour and it should find the quickest route taking into account the speed of traffic. Currently it's suggesting going via Southampton - M27, A34, M4.0

Yep thats the route i usually take avoiding london end of M3/M4
AT that time can get a bit heavy through Arundel bypass (non dualled), Chichester bypass and around portsmouth, southampton but then usually free flowing.
If the M3/A34/M4 bits bad you can always continue along the M27 and take the A36 to Salisbury then either the A338 to Marlborough or continue along the A36 to Warminster and take the A350 to chippenham with the last bit on smaller A roads.
There is a Sainsburys/MandS just of the M27 at hedge end on the east of southampton or a Waitrose just off the A36 in Salisbury which both have petrol and cafe quite handy for a quick pitstop (obvs supermarket hours!) - and cheaper than the services.0 -
More info perhaps would help - counties?
There are two Worthings in the UK.
And three Lynehams.0 -
Google Maps on the PC can show typical traffic for a given day / time
Turn Traffic option on then switch from Live to Typical traffic
Not seen this option on phone versions of Google Maps though ?0 -
Should have said, Worthing West Sussex and Lyneham just off M4, near Chippenham.
Didn't realise there were so many of them!0 -
I don't think you could do better than the route maxheadroom has suggested.0

Yes, will try that way. Just been told the road through Wooton Basset is closed with a long detour! AAARRRGGGHHH.
We will start the day with a 220mile drive down to Worthing and then go to Lyneham in the evening.
Should sleep well!!!0 -
Well, we decided to leave Worthing at 7PM, went visa M27, M3, A34 and M4, absolutely clear roads and great journey. unlike our trip down to Worthing that morning when there was a broken down lorry blocking a roundabout on the A24. Now back up in NW Lincolnshire with it's quiet roads.0
