Am I missing something really obvious here ???

I set up a wireless network (with the help of albertross) last night.
I want the network so as to file/print share between 2 PC's.
When I went to bed last night it seemed to be working fine but I have then had the same fault all day today and it is really bugging me !!!!
When I reboot the PC's the network seems to restrict the 2nd PC (ie the one not linked directly to router).
I have to re set up the network on both PC's before it will work again.
It keeps denying access to the 2nd PC. I have tried switching off both firewalls and still no joy, the only way that I seem to be able to fix it is to go thru set up each time

" I have to re set up the network on both PC's before it will work again"
what exactly do you do?
When it is working, if you then switch off the main pc, does it still work?Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time? :rolleyes:0 -
Could be something to do with Symantec filtering or network protocol!!!
theres three thing you need to look at:
Firstly check your router recognises all the computers on your network
Second make sure Norton is configured to allow sharing, if not forward the ports
Third make sure Windows is configured to allow file sharing
Then run your network settup wizard
PS dont forget to save all your settings...
If all else fails check this link

Like last night....I click on to "My Network Places", then on "Set up a home or small office network" then I follow that through naming my workgroup.
I do EXACTLY the same on 2nd PC naming the workgroup the same.0 -
When you switch on both from cold, does the internet work on both PC's without going through this rigmorole?
If you then switch off the pc wired to the router, does the other PC still work on the internet?Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time? :rolleyes:0 -

Yes to both questions.
However something intersting that I did notice that is unusual today....
When we bought the router we were misadvised that we would need a USB adaptor for each PC. Obviously now that I understand that one of the PC's is permantly connected to router then i only needed to buy 1 USB adaptor.
Previously (when someone pointed out that I didnt need a USB adaptor in the PC connected directly to router) when I disconnected adaptor the internet would stay live (with a slight outage).
However today when i disconnect the adaptor I cannot get the internet on main PC (ie the one permanently connected to router via ethernet cable). ???0 -
Try disabling the norton firewall on both, then boot, just to see if it is norton related.
if you do an ipconfig /all on both pc's, do the dns/gateway/dhcp servers all point to the router?Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time? :rolleyes:0 -
Have tried disabling Norton and trying but without going through the set up again this doesnt do the trick.
When you say disable it on both and boot, the boot will reenable it.
With regards ipconfig/all - yes all 3 pointing to router on both PC's0 -
Ive not used Norton but, if you open the Norton CP and look in the firewall settings, you should have a slider or a drop down menu to set your firewall. Make sure your fire wall is still working but also make sure printer and file sharing is enabled.
Next still in the firewall settings look for advanced options.
There should be an option for zones that should already have your router IP.
Add IP address for both machines here or an IP range, say,192.168.0.1 to 192.168.0.3 this should stop your firewall blocking any access to your network. Do this on all your pc's.
Also go into your network connections and right click your connection for properties. Do this on both pc's and post what you have in the box labled "this connection uses the following items"To travel at the speed of light, one must first become light.....0
