The best linux distros for an old machine are the 32 bit versions of Linux Mint xfce, Zorin lite, Xubuntu, Peppermint 7, LXLE, AntiX.

  • Looking at what we're all suggesting in the way of distros, I'm beginning to think that installation to a USB stick is the way forward. While most of these will list a disk space requirement that looks promising, you'll find things a bit cramped once you've finished.
Signature on hold as I've seen no unused witty comments to plaigarise.

i have an asus eeePC 901 (with in-built sim card holder) sitting gathering dust.

How did you install the SIM card reader, out of interest? I'm surprised there was room in the case.

I have Arch Linux installed on the internal storage on my EEE 901. I had to mount /usr separately to split the OS across the two SSDs appropriately, but there's plenty of room, as you can see.
