Help October tax code change

My husband has just got his October wage slip . up until now i have transferred some of my personal allowance to him ( married tax code ) as I am a non tax payer. So his ttax code has had an M at the end . However this month the marriage tax code is non existent and his new tax code ends in W1 M1 which I gather is an emergency tax code . Nothing has happened to change our circumstances so what's going on ?

If he hasn't had a coding notice then tell him to call HMRC and ask.

He has had a tax code notice but I just don't understand why after 6 years in the same job with no recent change of circumstances why he would suddenly be on a emergency tax code ?

Is there nothing on the notice then? Normally there would be some sort of explanation.

Have the numbers remained the same and just the letters changed?

Nope I can't see any reason . The numbers have changed its his previous tax code minus the £1100 part of my personal tax allowance that I give to him as I'm a non tax payer

Has he had a payrise or bonus or something that might lead them to believe he's higher rate?

He is getting a bigger bonus at Christmas but obviously that's a few months away yet so shouldn't affect this pay day ?

He has a company car but has had that for a year now and his tax code was right for that ?

The use of a Week1/Month1 code (non-cumulative tax code) when a tax code is reduced is standard tax office practise, it does not mean that you are on an emergency tax code. If it was not used on this basis the new lower tax allowance would be back-dated to the start of the tax year, resulting in a very low or possibly no net pay on the first month of it being applied. The problem is that the married persons tax adjustment has been removed and only HMRC can advise why this has happened. It could just be a mistake but you will have to contact them to find out what is happening.
  • Which tax years have you applied for marriage allowance for?

If it included 2015:16 then how much did hubby earn last year as £21000 so far this year plus company car must be making him close to being a higher rate payer?

What do his P60 and P11D show for last year?
