SpeedTouch 585 - questions from a router noob

hello.

a bit of reading, but please bear with it.

i have only ever had a modem and never a router, dont laugh.

i have a couple of questions that i hope someone may be able to help me with and explain is simple terms :)

1. this is what i have - Software Release: 6.1.4.3 i have done some searching on here and see there is some discussion about firmware for routers. should i update this firmware? i have only used the router for a few hours so cant speak about reliabilty. i will be switching the router off when not in use.

2. i was given the router by a friend, nice guy :) in the user section there is "administrator" and "admin". i have changed the PW for Admin but cant seem to do anything with administrator....

i cant seem to login with administrator no matter what i use as the PW, i can login with my updated details for Admin. i am happy with that if its the way it is, at least i know i am secure.

3. i am using wires, no wireless needed, can i switch off wireless alltogether? the manual says if its OFF the wlan light will be red, where as mine is amber and it occasionally flickers.

4. finally....having tested DL speeds from various sources (i dont use p2p etc) i am DL at about 234 on my 2mb connection...this is about the same as from my modem and i understand this is a good speed?!

i do remember when i 1st went from 1mb to 2mb DL speed was poor but i used a tool that adjusted i think things called VPN and MTU??

i know there is no need for me to change these things but if i did have to would i need a downloaded programme to do it again or are these settings in the router itself? if so how do i get to them?

i have read the manual i DL'd but tbh its all a bit double dutch to me. btw, i dont have a installation CD if that makes any difference to any of the questions posed.

thank you for your time.

pfpf.

Test your speed here, if that is 234mbit/sec it is slow.

are you sure its slow? i thought it was good for a 2mb line  maybe i worded it wrong, my DL's are around 234kbps.

i agree with your firmware advice and that i have no need to adjust MTU, just wondered where it was in my router menu/settings :)

so just need confirmation on the password thing and how to switch off the wireless bit...thanks again.

you only normally have one username/password, usually admin user, so not sure of the need for another account on the router. The accounts on the router are under user management.

The encryption password is important, because that protects you from the neighbours if wireless is enabled, you should be able to turn wireless off if you browse around the config screens.

1 Go to the SpeedTouch™ Web pages.
2 In the menu, select Home Network.
    3 Click your WLAN.
4 In the upper right corner, click Configure.
5 On the Wireless Access Point page, you can modify the Security settings.

see section 4.6.5 of the manual to turn off the wireless completely

1 In the left menu, click Home Network.
2 Under Wireless, click the name of the Access Point you want to configure, change Interface Enabled to disabled

234 kilobits or kilobytes? Run the download test, and report back the speed, if it says 200 kilobits, then it is slow, for a 2meg line, at this time of night
Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time?

    firmware - happy :)
    MTU question - happy :)
    speed - happy? :)

i actually just found how to turn off wireless alltogether so im happy :)

just the admin bit...i dont think i explained very well, will have another go tomorrow :)

    cheers mate.
  • if the admin account on the router is "an administrator" account, you can either forget about the administrator user, or delete it.

on the speed test, if you really are on a 2 meg link, it could be upto 9-10 times faster, but that depends on distance from exchange, quality of line etc (if it is adsl).

    2 megabits/sec is 2000kbps

i dont claim to be a techie, but i think you are wrong about the speed. a 1mb file takes about 4 seconds to DL...that is as fast as 2mb can be i thought?

thanks for the rest of the help, appreciated.
  • Thats 1.9 megabits, which is ok.

    all sorted :)

administrator deleted, and admin works fine. wireless switched off, happy with firmware, no idea where to find settings like MTU, but no need to mess anyway.

    thanks again.

  • Just FYI if you do need to fiddle with the 585 MTU settings, you can't do it from the web interface but need to telnet in via command line :D. This is a good resource for various settings for the excellent speedtouch 585 and other modem/routers.
I have the same firmware as yourself and as its keeping a solid connection 24/7, uptime 9 days so far, have no need to upgrade.
