LV Car Insurance - how bloomin' expensive?!

I know car insurance prices have risen recently, but does anyone know how some companies can be competitive, but others can't??

LV quoted me between £800 and £900 renewal even with 13 years NCB, yet others like Privilege, Admiral and Churchill are £500-£650.

Has anyone had experience of using Privilege, Admiral and Churchill?

Most insurers give discounts to new customers, and make the bulk of their money from customers who continue to renew once the discount has expired. Your renewal from LV will not include the new customer discount, so it's not surprising that you'll find cheaper prices elsewhere.

There are other reasons why some insurers are cheaper than others - they often offer different levels of cover and standards of customer service, and each insurer has its own target market of customers who'll they'll try hardest to price competitively for - but if you're comparing a renewal quote to a new business quote it's the new customer discount that will make up the biggest chunk of the difference.

Admiral are the Ryanair of insurance and I recommend them if you don't mind having a pretty basic level of cover, paying admin charges to make any changes to your policy, and you enjoy long waits on the phone when you try to talk to them. Churchill and Privilege are both brand names used by Direct Line. Direct Line are certainly reasonably good - not sure whether the cover sold under the other Brands is identical to DL's, but it would also be worth getting a quote from DL. You'll have to do that directly as they're not on comparison sites.

Alternatively if you're generally happy with LV and don't want to switch you could phone them up, tell them you're thinking of leaving and ask if they can match one of the other quotes you've had. The worst they can do is say no.

As you must be at least 151 years old to have 134 years no claims, your age probably has an effect on the premium due to probably having worse eyesight, and the possibility of you dying at the wheel and causing an accident. This has probably had an effect on your premium.

Congratulations on becoming the oldest person in the UK, and maybe the world ;)

I don't have anything like 134 years ncd, but find LV to be the most competitive for car insurance. When my renewal came up recently, the price had of course gone up. I called them and they were happy to match a lower quote I found with another insurer
  • I've just looked it up - the first car insurance policy wasn't written until 1897.

So your 134 years NCB must be fake ;)

It's only 15 years out - can't see that making much of a difference to a quote :)

Maybe it's the OP's occupation that is the problem - he must be a Highlander.

I have just asked LV for a letter stating my how many years NCB I have as some brokers and insurers ask for it when taking out a policy with them. LV have provided me with a letter saying I have their max NCB of 9 years, even though it is more, a letter stating which they flat refuse to provide! Has anyone had this issue with other car insurance providers?

The bottom line won't be affected much (if at all) by your ncd only showing 9 years.

Do dummy quotes online with 9 and 134 years to see whether the issue is worth the candle
