I was going to ask if you could steep them into vodka to make rosehip vodka, then remove them for drinking.

Didn;t know about the barbs, and have no idea if the above would work anyway.

    Hi smitty2702

Years ago I made Rosehip wine which if I can recall was quite nice. Also a friend of mine I am sure made Rosehip Jelly. When my kids were small Rosehip Syrup was considered good for them!

Not able to produce recipes but try Google - I am sure you will find some recipes.

  • I made rosehip syrup last year - delish as a cordial or poured over ice cream. I used the wartime 'Ministry of Food' recipe....

PS I put it into 150ml bottles as it freezes well too.....

You can make rose hip syrup. You need to strain it through a jelly bag several times I believe because of the tiny little barbed seeds. These can cause irritation in the throat if eaten ;)

    Hi smitty,

Last year I was searching for a recipe for rosehips and I came across this webpage (there's also a recipe for rosehip syrup there) I made the apple and rosehip jelly and everyone who tried it, loved it. Hopefully I'll make some more this year.

Yes you can - make it a double layer to ensure that you catch everything. Use the cloth to line a colander in a large bowl and pour the mixture in, then gather up the corners and edges, hold them together with string or a strong elastic band (such as postie leaves in our street!) move everything together and suspend muslin bundle from a cup hook or similar over the bowl, and remove the colander. Leave to drip for several hours or overnight. do not squeeze as it can make the syrup/jelly cloudy.

If you have no suitable hook, then you can turn a stool or chair upside down onto a table or worksurface, wedge the bowl in the side bars or place on the underside of the seat; attach one corner of the muslin to each of the legs with string or elastic bands.
