Address History question

Hi everyone,

My girlfriend and I are just starting the process of buying our first house and I was hoping you could help with a question I have about address history.

Due to her job, my girlfriend has spent the last 3 years living and working in different locations - 3 cities in 3 years. During this time she has never been on any house bills (as she has always just paid into a house account), has not been registered to vote in any of these locations, and has kept her registered address for banking as her parents address.

When making a mortgage application, I'm conscious that her "footprint" at these addresses will be minimal so would it be better to put her address as her partent's address for this period of time?

Any advice would be very much appreciated!

Honesty is best. Being caught out in a lie would make lenders suspicious and more reluctant to lend to you.

Is she on the electoral roll now?
  • Thanks for getting back to me!

Yes she's on the electoral role now in our current rented property.

If you're using a broker, I'd ask for their opinion.

I had a similar situation to your girlfriend a few years ago. Because I was only staying temporarily, I never went on the electoral roll, had any bills/bank accounts, or even registered for a Drs. I considered my parents' address to be my 'permanent' address.

Also, my partner was unable to open a bank account recently because he gave his address history including places where he had temporarily rented and and been on the electoral roll, but all his banks were still registered at his parents' - once he'd changed the address history to just his parents', he could open one no problem.
  • Thanks BlaEm! We are using a broker and have asked directly. His opinion was that it's better to give the honest address history (As Kynthia suggested!) despite less evidence of these addresses than perhaps you would expect.

Fortunately she has a car which was insured and was registered with a GP at each location during her time there so those locations should be visible depending on how the bank does their checks during the mortgage application process.

    Thanks for advice everyone!
