Knowing there is an issue, scammers will be out and about today.
If you receive a "fraud" alert text message, but the number to call starts 070, 084, 087 or 09, that text message is itself a fake. Do not call the number in the text message or you will be scammed.
All banks now use 03 or 080 numbers. Use the number found on a recent statement (not on a letter) or found on the bank's official website (not one found on a third-party website).0 -
I'm genuinely puzzled. Given that texts can come in at any time of the day or night, pretty much from anyone and anywhere, why on earth would anyone sleep near a mobile that isn't on silent?
Personally it was because my grandma was rushed to hospital at the weekend and I don't want to miss any calls from my mother if there is a change for the worse
Other than that I don't normally get texts or calls in the middle of the night!0 -

Wow - those are stringent T&Cs dictating a mobile needs to be on 'sound alert' for texts!!0 -

Equipment failures (on an unmanned site) are notified by text...every 15 minutes until acknowledged. Thankfully they're rare, but rewarding when they happen.0 -

Crikey - credit to you working like that.
A pager (from time to time) and landline call out list (again time to time) were bad enough for me!0 -
I first heard it on the news on Sunday. Got my text alert 5:37 am and checked later this morning and indeed: 21 pounds had gone missing from my account!
However, the money was back this evening. Me, too, have never ever used the card, so somehow Tescobank has been hacked directly. No damage done, but makes me feel uneasy about their security.:(

Waken up by a text?
The mobile is in a manbag, in a different room.
I only see a text when I check the mobile, about once a day.0 -
Not sure if you're still watching this thread at MSE Towers. I found this on twitter-

reason I'm mentioning it here is because of a previous article you had on MSE. In the previous article - I don't recall which bank was involved- I remember MSE saying that the hackers could read balances, but not carry out any transactions, so "no worries". But could the earlier have been a practice run for the hack at Tesco ?0 -

The article is merely the speculation of a badly informed blogger with a vivid imagination. For example:
"The internet banking portal has been taken down" - really? No user reported problems logging in, and Tesco didn't say they took down online access.
"it seems obvious that the "hack" is not a massive abuse of credit cards." - that would be because nobody ever said it had anything to do with credit cards0
