Photo storage

I am writing this while I can still think of the questions!

For the past few days, my Lenovo Yoga 2 has been playing up. Websites I visit, e.g. shopping/browsing, stop working and I am prompted to "recover webpage" which only works sometimes.

Occasionally I have had a message about low memory so I thought I would delete what I could. I had some documents on Word which I was able to delete. I know I have a lot of photos. I tend to take them from my phone to free up space, and transfer them to My Pictures. I regularly send them to a back up drive (removable) but I guess things were so clogged up that it wouldn't let me do that in the usual way.

Anyway, I have now managed to put them onto my removable drive but would like to take them off my Lenovo. I noticed that I have One Drive and my query is, if I put them on One Drive, is that a cloud or will they still be taking up memory?

Another query is, is there any way I can take the two to three thousand photos and videos from my removable drive and put them on One Drive (obviously only if it doesn't use up memory?

Would I be better off, altogether, by investigating some sort of Cloud, free or at a small fee?

I would appreciate any answers to my questions. Thanks.

memory is not disk/ssd space. a browser crash/low memory message is unconnected to photos or documents or video's. update or reinstall your browser

how much space is available on c:, how much space do the videos and photo's take up

unsure why you'd want to delete them from the removable drive, they are more reliable than ssd's and cloud storage, and doing so would make it redundant

I have to admit to having little clue about technology as you can tell. I use Edge and IE as my browsers I think. Since updating to Windows 10 I've never gotten to grips with things really. I won't wipe the external drive but like to have another back up (cloud?) in case anything happens to it as there are years of memories there.
I always accept updates as they come along.

flash drives/hard disks/sd-cards are a cheap means of secondary backup

Google photos will back up all your pictures automatically for free.....See HERE.
Leaving you cash to buy an external hard drive for use as extra backup.;)

One thing you can do is think about what pictures you actually want to keep and why - a bit of carefully editing/pruning can save an awful lot of storage space.

Download WinDirStat, run it, and it will show what is taking up your hard drive space, what type of file dominates (whether this is photos or not), and where the space-hogging files are.

As was said above, you may well have plenty of space, and didn't need to delete stuff after all. Go into Win Explorer, and look at the amount of space used and free for your HDD

Oh no, do not delete any pictures that you want. Space to keep them is quite cheap and so you may just need some more storage that you can use, much like is already being discussed.

Once you delete them they probably are gone forever(unless you have stored them somewhere else of course, but it is better if you also have them easy to get at!)

You need to take some of the advice on here and be logical about what you do.

Post the full details of the lenovo model and the hard disk size. Then also the amount of it which is used. That is for starters.

On a computer there are often files that the system has used (or the programme/apps) that are no longer required some of which are called temp files. These should be the ones to prioritise for deletion -not those you value or cannot replicate!

Then you can consider if there is a problem, the drive is simply full or you need to get extra storage, and where. No point in jumping to conclusions. Many experts on here that can help do the right thing.
    Edit: added comment;
Do not start with advice to delete your photos and videos.
Do start with Windows Explorer to do a bit of simple diagnosis. If you don't know how just post and someone will walk you through it step by step.

By searching around to see what was available, so far I have found a great deal of stuff in my Recycle Bin which I have now deleted. I think it is going to help....
  • Yes it should free up some space, but make sure you really do want to delete those items first........and then still follow the advice already posted on the thread.
