Lights too bright?

It seems to me that new cars, especially 4x4 cars, have headlights that are way too bright. When driving, I could swear that the beam lights are on behind me. The whole car fills with light and I can't see anything from ANY of my mirrors.

I also notice on some car ads that they advertise "ultra-bright headlights" like it is a good thing. The most dangerous everyday conditions in my opinion is driving at night and not being able to see because a car in front or behind is blinding you with their headlights.

Another thing I have noticed is cars using their fog lights and not their headlights.

Rant over.

Sure they are not DRLs ?

  • Well, maybe but this is late at night, no natural light whatsoever and they are definitely in the fight light position with the lead lights not on at all. Which is weird as I thought most cars require the headlights to be on in order to turn on the figures lights. I have only seen this a handful of times though

    Are the tail lights on?

With DRLs the tail lights will be off.

In my mr2 every car dazzles me from behind because it's so low. Flick the rear view mirror, problem solved.
  • The light wars have made night driving a thoroughly unpleasant experience, getting worse every year as more and more vehicles with garish overbright fairy lights come into use, replacing vehicles with normal lamps which get scrapped.

There is no answer to this other than to buy a high vehicle yourself, i run a high 4x4 (old fashioned normal lamps, which are more than adequate) and its far better for not being blinded.

Too many people in the country, too many cars on the road as a result, this and other problems are only going to get worse so think about making your own life more bearable.

    Not just the headlights.

I was following an Audi the other day, who'd left his rear foglights on. No sign of fog, of course.

They were so bright they were hurting my eyes.

I was out in my sports car yesterday evening and the oncoming traffic's headlights were a bit on the bright side.

I totally agree with the poster, After being dazzled by a new 4X4 which I saw parking I went to the driver and asked why they had the lights on main beam all the time, she said she didn't and showed me that they were dipped, I then said she should turn them down as they were too high, she didn't know she could do this so I showed hed the thumb wheel which had been in it's highest position since she had taken delivery a few weeks earlier!
