PC running low on disc space

I am starting to get constant mesages that my laptop is running low on memory or disc space.
Why is this?
On file explorer it shows OS-Install (C:) 47.1mb free of 232gb, Local disk 65.7mb free of 99.9mb.
Is it just about deleting files or is the operating system too large?
I recently upgraded to Windows 10

you have 200gb of crap to delete - find the largest files you dont need.

Why is this? (47.1mb free of 232gb) - 47mb is less than 1Gb.

You have around 0.43% of the disk left. You've used 99.57%

Download WinDirStat and run it to see what's using the space before you start deleting stuff.

We don't know if you have lots of photos, mp3s or whatever filling that 230-odd Gb of space, but WinDirStat will tell you which type of file is taking the most space, which of your files are the largest, and where they all are.

You may need to clear some disk space for WinDirStat, so you could do stuff like deleting Temporary Internet Files, look at your docs, photos and files to see if there's anything ancient that you haven't accessed in years, that could be deleted. Empty the Recycle Bin after all this, too.

Store photos in a cloud service eg google drive.

Got a spare external hard drive you can use to move files on to it ?

Or, as poster above suggested, move some stuff off the machine to make room - to cloud storage, external hard drive, or even USB stick, compact flash / SD card, etc.

First off, follow this guide, written for vista but the same principle applies to all versions from visa onwards:-

Once this is done, run CCleaner for good measure ;)

  • You have to delete files that you really don't need or save your files to sd card if you don't want to delete it.
  • Directory Report is another good tool for finding where your disk space went
