Car insurance renewal help

I had my offer to renew from the AA a couple of weeks ago. It is due for renewal on 11th November. I have looked for a better quote but was going to have a good look on Tues 8th November.
The AA phoned me last week and I said I hadn't decided yet and they said to let them know before renewal date.
Today, 5 days before rental, they have taken the money and sent me a text thanking me for renewing.
They did this last year and when I phoned them ( before renewal date) They said I had to pay an admin fee if I cancelled. I have looked at my offer to renew letter and it just says to let them know before renewal. I will phone tomorrow as they are closed today but if they say I can't cancel what do I say.

You do not have to pay a cancellation fee if you transfer to a new company to run concurrently from the AA renewal.
It's best to inform them prior to the renewal date.
They should not have told you there is a cancellation fee to pay if you do not renew the cover with them.
If they persist with telling you this, you can make an "Official Complaint" which they are duty bound to properly investigate0 -
Thank you but they have already taken the money from my credit card even though it's not due for renewal till 11th. I will phone in the morning and ask them to refund me but I know they did this last year and I gave in.0

I think they won't want to refund the money to your card until you instruct them to lapse the cover.
Does the letter they send you re renewal advise you that they will collect the money prior to the renewal date?0 -
It just says on or near renewal date0
-
Don't let them put you off moving your cover elsewhere.
If they continue to try and scare you into renewing put in an Official Complaint. Their staff are not allowed to intentionally miss lead you, if they are unintentionally missleading you then they need retraining, if as a company they train their staff to do this (Which is unlikely) the regulator will award them with a huge fine0 -
