Insurance/contractor not doing work

My parents contacted their home insurance due to subsidence on 1 wall of their house due to a burst pipe, they paid the excess and contractors etc were sent out to look at the job.
A gas box had to be moved because it was on the same wall so they contacted British gas and said they would be back after it was done.
The underground work was completed and builders were hired to fix the wall, these builders never materialised so the main person in charge (I don't know technical terms for all involved) was contacted who claimed there had been a problem with these contractors, more were being hired and he would hear more soon.

Fast forward a year and nothing has been done, zilch, nada... the subsidence seems to be getting worse and although my dad calls them repeatedly it's always the same old excuse of chasing various people up... they put a portaloo on their drive which gets emptied weekly even though it is never used which someone is clearly paying for in the chain but that's as far as it goes. No one ever calls my dad back and it seems like they've had their excess payment and ran for the hills.

Does anyone know where he stands and what the next line of action would be?

  • Complain to the insurer. If that doesn't get the ball rolling, or their response isn't to your satisfaction, or they don't respond within 8 weeks, you can escalate it to the FOS
  • Would the best way to complain be through letter? While on the phone they just claim to be chasing up the builders and will call him back but never do

Yes send a letter headed "complaint". Details of their complaint process will be set out in the policy documents.

Then the clock is ticking to the 8 week deadline for their repy

I would send a registered letter and keep a copy, that way if you need to escalate it you have proof of your complaint.

No need for the extra expense of a signed for service, which is no use if the recipient chooses to refuse it!

Just hand it in at the post office and get a free cert of posting if you want proof of posting
  • Ok will get him to write one tomorrow and get it posted. Thankyou x
