Oil Vs water based woodstain

Several years ago I had a new front door constructed. The joiner put on 3 coats of Sikkens Cetol Fiter 7 Plus - an oil based woodstain.
This year I had new window frames constructed. Different joiner as the 1st one had retired. I asked for the same woodstain, to match the front door.
After installation it transpired he'd used a Dulux water based stain of a similar colour. He said water-based was better, safer and lasted longer, but offered to put a top coat of Sikkens on.
1) what are the pros/cons of water Vs oil based stains?
2) what are the implication (if any)of mixing ie a coat of Sikkens over 2 coats of Dulux?

The rule of thumb with professional decorating is never alter paint and stain suppliers. Stick with one brand for all coats.
I have a low opinion of water based paints and stains.
I rate Sikkens as being top class material, but have not used any for a while. Sadolin is probably cheaper, and recently in B&Q was £20 for a 2.5 litre can - a bargain price.0
