My tip is don't wait until next summer, request a payment card and make a weekly payment at the post office, paypoint or even online. And phone up with meter readings after a week and then you can get idea how much it is costing you per week.

I'm on a (badly installed) smart meter and once BG have sorted that out next week, I can monitor my usage. I'm putting away money per month as they haven't managed to set up a direct debit for me yet (although the house has gas, it is only used for the oven, but BG reckon I will use 9000kwh per annum.....so we need to straighten that out).

Thanks guys. I'm fairly intelligent but physics was never my strong point!

I've still not mastered the Rointe instructions but have not had time to sit down and do so this weekend as I work two jobs. I have two oil filled radiators running for a couple of hours per evening (all day yesterday with the so called "free" electric day!) so at least I know I will have supplemental fallback once the Rointes are up and running.

I miss the central heating in my last property but it's the price I paid to move from a flat to a house - rental one beds are rare in my area :-\

The trouble with radiation only heating (such as infra red), is that the heat is more rapidly lost from your body due to the cold air around you.

"Radiant temperature has a greater influence than air temperature on how we lose or gain heat to the environment."

The temperature of those panels can't be much more than about 50C for safety reasons, in which case they're going to emit about 600 times less radiant heat than a red hot element.

Well I managed to programme them last night and they're next to bloody useless! I suspect if I left them on 24/7 I would be lovely and toasty but I don't have a bottomless bank account sadly.

But I guess it takes the tinge off the cold and the rats can still run on them because the top isn't too hot, bless them.

Thanks for all your physics advice guys!!

Thanks! I've mastered it now (sort of) but that video was very interesting and I'll keep the link in case for some reason the programming didn't work by the time I get home......
