Boarding and skimming ceilings with new coving quote

Hi all
We've just moved into our three bed 1930's semi which needs decorating throughout. The ceilings (apart from the upstairs and downstairs hallways) are covered in woodchip wallpaper over lath and plaster ceilings.
Understandably we want the ceilings sorted out! A plasterer came over earlier this week and suggested overboarding the ceilings and then skimming them. He will then fit proper plaster coving to replace the polystyrene stuff already there.
The quote is £1650 for as follows:
Two chaps to overboard three double bedrooms and the living room.
Him and a colleague to skim all the ceilings inc the upstairs and downstairs hallways.
Supply and fit coving throughout.
To me this sounds pretty good- I had been quoted £1200 by another plasterer but this was to remove the paper and skim. I am concerned about taking the paper down though as I suspect this is whats holding the ceiling up!
How does the £1650 quote sound?

it's about £200-£250 in materials to board/skim/ put new coving and 3 man-days to do it.
would I pay £1650 for that?lol no... I would just go and do it myself, it would be much faster than trying to find someone to do it and I would save £1400 , hardly a rocketscience to do it as well...

I wouldn't pay £1650 for 3 ceilings but I would also not try skimming it myself. It is hardly a simple diy job anyone can do.

I love the "simple job" comments. Boarding over lath ceiling isn't easy, time spent finding the joints to secure to for a start. I'd say its a good price, if the plastering is good go for it!Mr Generous - Landlord for more than 10 years. Generous? - Possibly but sarcastic more likely.0

I said it's not a simple job, I wouldn't attempt skimming a ceiling..

have you actually done it before that you can say that it isn't simple job?
or just read what some people say online? It's !!!! easy (as in -takes hardly any skill to do) . how do I know? Just re-did whole house, first time plastering myself and it's NOT hard to learn how to do it and to get a nice finish, not at all..Yes it's a very fast-paced tiring physical work but that's about it...only takes a good quality trowel.
Who are the guys doing the plastering work usually? Uneducated Highschool dropouts mostly with no skills whatsoever... I guess if you don't know how to boil a water or cook eggs it is kinda hard ( a lot of people in this country are that pathethic tho... so if you are one of them than yes it's a hard work...)0 -
I have worked in the building trade as a joiner for nearly 30 years, you say you have done your whole house, you might think it looks great, I might think it looks crap...
It only takes a good trowel :rotfl: if I gave you a good hammer you can then build a house?
I would love to see you go up to some of the plasterers I work with and tell them what you think of them..
I'm pathetic? You really are a total !!!!...

Calm down Boss
Plastering actually really just takes a good trowel and a half day of practice before you can go and do it properly, get a crap cheapo trowel and you will struggle, get a £40 marshalltown one and you will think why the f the internet is full of fake info about how hard it is to learn it :rotfl: Don't ask me how I know it...almost gave it up with a cheapo crap on the first day.
Joiner here as well :j Not really sure if you even need a good hammer to build a house, well maybe if you build a wooden house that is.0 -
we too live in a 1930's semi, and my plasterer (who's finish is as smooth as a pane of glass) charges £250 per room, which includes walls, ceiling (including boards if needed) and making good any area we've chased out for new cables etc. Each room takes 2 of them (he has a young apprentice helping him) between 6-8 hours to finish.

Some people have the intelligence to read and comprehend a post.
The OP is talking about 4 lids to tack and 6 to set plus coving right around.
You reckon, 3 man days, yeah right, typical DIYer with out a clue telling a trades man how much to charge.0
