Best gravity type shower that runs off hot water tank?

Hi folks,

We are refitting the bathroom and just realised I need your advice (after reading the electric shower thread) about the best kind of gravity shower that runs off hot water tank (oil central heating)

Currently the old one Aqualisa (about 25 years old) is like a large turn on wheel kind of thing, with a slider on it to mix between hot and cold. Its a bit fiddly to get the right mix of temperature at times, but good power and works ok, needs to be replaced though as it has a leak.

Bathroom is downstairs, hot water cylinder is upstairs (water to cylinder heated by oil central heating)

I see on the electric shower thread where a thermostatic mixer shower is mentioned.

Is this basically what we have at the moment, and will the replacement have any advantages?
The company doing the work has quoted £99 + vat for something called a Cooltouch Shower, I take it, it is something similar to what we currently have, but I really don't know. I believe Cooltouch only means its cool to touch.

Can we do better than the old shower setup or the one that is proposed with a thermostatic mixer shower, and what is the approp cost?

Many thanks once again for your kind help.
:)

    £99 sounds a bit too cheap !

Your aqualisa shower sounds same as mine

"Is this basically what we have at the moment," - depends which cartridge you have fitted ?

Depends where the leak is, either the cartridge itself, or the body
Replaced both those part on mine, though was some time ago - so may or many not be still available

Just the thermostatic cartridge ( the internal bit which auto adjusts the temp) for our Aqualisa shower is at least £80 on it own

Our is gravity fed too, and is powerful enough, which I put down to the 22mm pipe from mixer to head

Edit: "Bathroom is downstairs", so you have a massive head of water there compared to our which is upstairs and tank in loft

Normal on bath type mixers try to squeeze the mixed water into a 15mm flexi hose, which kills the pressure

    Manual Cartridge or Auto Cartridge

Just checked my reciept from Aqualisa for a thermostatic cartridge and the price was £74.90 + vat
So same as on current web site

Except my receipt is dated 1994 !! - so still good value !
