  • Thanks. I shall suggest that Mum makes discrete enquiries as to her great niece's circumstances. She always says that when she goes she would like her money to help family members and various charities. I am sure she doesn't want to unintentionally leave anything to the DWP :-)

I would think that the surest way to safeguard monies intended for the great neice would be to set up a trust. Legal advice will be required for that rather than relying on input from here.

You are Bob on :-) Spoke to Mum tonight and she said don't worry - her solicitor is an inheritance specialist who has set up trusts for her nephews, nieces, their children and her Godchildren.
Apparently she views them all as !!!!less spendthrifts and has tied everything up in such a way that the family money can't be thrown down the drain on anyone's whim. She has ensured that it will be passed down the generations until inflation has rendered it worthless :-)

No wonder my 92 (tomorrow) year old Mum helps all her friends at church to do their tax returns !
She didn't specify whether or not I am a !!!!less spendthrift :-)
