noise - manhole cover

A new road was recently laid on land opposite my home. This was because new houses were being built. In the middle of the road is a manhole and it makes a loud clanging noise every time a car drives over it. The noise is driving me nuts and it wakes me up early in the morning. Has anyone else had or is having this problem? Is there any official way to have the manhole covered "repaired" by the authorities if I make a complain?

  • Has the road been adopted yet?

If not it will be down to the builder.

I think it's the responsibility of the water utility company in your area rather than council? Might be worth checking with them?

In could however be wrong but won't do any harm asking!

  • I had this once - I called the council and they came and fixed it. As above the road will need to have been adopted for the council to take interest.

We had the same problem, we reported it and it took a while for them to sort out who was responsible. In the end it was Virgin Media, who came out straight away and fixed it. They put rope around the edges of the hole and it worked a treat.
Living on a main road it does need re-doing now and again but they usually come out withing a couple of days of reporting it.

I had to put up with a clanging manhole cover on a busy road outside a holiday home that I rented in Cyprus. It nearly drove me mad.

Luckily I got to go home after two weeks.
