Thank you MSE and some positivity

Hi Everyone.

Back in 2009 MSE (bacjk when all this was green fields :) really helped me in a difficult part of my life.

I lost 10 years work, all my businesses and all my assets after making a badly timed purchase of a new business just prior to the credit crunch.

I declared myself bankrupt in March 2009 (I was the 208th in the first 9 weeks of that courts activity in 2009- that brought it home).

Without MSE I would never have known what I was doing, how to cope with the aftermath, how to work out what to do, or get any comfort.

My clearest memory is the judge asking e "do you really want to do this?"- which I always thought was an amusing question- of course I didnt' want to do it. I felt at 32 that I was a total failure and had screwed mine, and my loved ones, life up.

I went through the well worn route with the insolvency service- as I had no assets left (I'd sold the house, cars and liquididated al the assets to pay debt off), it was very very quick. My only creditors were banks and HMRC and they all got some money.

The only positive time in that period was a call with HMRC who were chasing me for £100k of unpaid VAT and CT. I very much enjoyed requesting them to make me bankrupt- they suddenly went from very difficult, to very friendly. unfortunately I still had to pay for my own bankruptcy :(

Anyway I was discharged in March 2010 and spent a year living with my parents, my in-laws and with friends (who were a huge support). I worked any job I could to make ends meet, but I wasn't in a great place.

7 years later, life couldn't be more different, I've just had a mortgage application from Halifax approved for a 90% LTV home in a lovely area- its a lovely family home for my wife, 3 year old and son to arrive baby bump. We have stable incomes, credit cards (which we only very rarely use) and are very comfortable financially.

My credit rating, mainly following the post bankruptcy credit repair thread, is now exemplary and life couldn't be better to be honest. At some point I will go back to being self employed, but probably once we've got young children out of the way.

So really what I wanted to say was twofold:

Firstly a HUGE thank you to MSE for helping now and in the past
and second

If you are having to through Bankuptcy then yes it will be a major life event, but it is NOT the end of the world, and can be a very positive thing.

I could not have improved my life to where it is today without declaring myself bankrupt 7 years ago.
