unfair charges

I just signed with sky last month. As I had problem with my phone line and didn't have the sky number handy, I googled the site for sky number. The first number/ site that the google search showed me was:

Results
0843 608 2130
recordyourskycall.com/
If you do not want your call recording you can call Sky direct on 0800 046 6431 or ... your email, simply click the link in the email to listen to the call recording.

I thought recording the call and emailing it is part of sky customer service policy! and was very pleased to see that! specially that I was going to complain about my phone line not working! I clicked the tab on my phone and the message says that :quot;your call will be recorded and emailed back to you. we put you through sky now"! it did not say that they are NOT part of sky and they did not say that they are ADDITINAL charges! now I received a bill for £90!! I don't know what to do as I can not afford to pay and I think this is very unfair of the company to trick people like me this easily. ( they didn't even emailed the conversation!!!)
I have been to this site (sorry as a new user I'm not allowed to post the link) when many people mentioned they were tricked the same way. can you help please?.

All of the information is clearly shown on the website.

We offer a call recording service and are not associated with any of the companies for which we provide call recording access numbers in any way.
Calls cost £0.07 per minute, plus your phone company's access charge.
How long were you on the phone to incur a charge of £90?
Their charges are 7p per minute then your phone company will charge up to 18p per minute for the call if calling from a landline. A call from a mobile will be higher.

For your future reference the Real Sky Freephone is

    Sky Freephone 0800 028 7855

Keep it for future reference, most sky numbers cost money. but the above is free and also as
far as I am aware all Skys calls are recorded
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.

The number you called is a premium rate "call connection service" that also offers to record your calls.

If you feel the website misled you as to the true nature of the service offered, complain to ASA.

Under optimal conditions you'd be charged around 50p a minute (https://www.gov.uk/call-charges)

That basically comes out as up to £30 an hour on mobiles. So 3x hours total would be the absolute minimum amount of time you spent speaking to Sky....

...3 expensively boring hours! :o (well a bit less if recordyourskycall take a cut)

And quite how googling "sky number" brought up recordyourskycall as one of the top matches is beyond me! No matter how many times I try, I cannot find it on the first two pages of google results! Maybe it was a paid ad? If so, just think that some clever individual has made an affiliate bonus off you :)

The bottom line is that, if you feel the charges are unfair, you should probably be complaining more to your phone provider ;) Because after all, nobody forced you to ring an 0843 number without knowing the associated costs :)

And it *Seems* that recordmycall take a £0.07 premium per minute to pay for the service they provide. That's only about £12.60 if we assume you were on the phone for 3 hours :) The rest was your service provider (well, their fault if you were misled about the costs prior to calling!)

  • I too found 0843 608 2130 as the contact to call Sky, and was also charged a huge sum of money.
Their rate is £0.07 yes, which is very low and doesn't raise any red flags, but they provide the recording as a service on top of that, which then builds up the final cost, even on short calls.
Their terms of service are terrible to read, with missing sections, do not explain what exactly is the service or company.

What I'd like to know from other users, was that charged a single time, or have I fallen under a subscription scheme, and if I don't request a cancellation somehow, will get charged again next month?
    Please comment. Thank you.

If you don't ring that (legal scam) number, you can't and won't be charged in the future.

In future, avoid the "Sponsored Links" provided by Google or other Search engines unless they are from the actual company you want to contact.

The call rate is not 7p per minute. It is 7p per minute set by the call-forwarding service plus the Access Charge set by the caller's phone provider. The Access Charge can be up to 12p per minute from landlines or up to 55p per minute from mobiles.

If you feel the website misled you as to the true nature of the service offered, complain to ASA.

The charges are made only while you call the number and end once you hang up.
