How do I find a good local architectural technologist/technician?

I am in Glasgow.
We are hoping to do some layout alterations -knock down couple walls and reposition stairs. I can only find 'Architects' online, however folk I have spoken to say as its not a huge job/not an extension (£25k spend) then we don't need an architect as they do cost a fortune!
Is there an expert who would be a step down from an architect so lower fees eg an architectural technologist/techician?
Thanks for any advice!

How much did the architect want to charge?
If it's internal alterations, you only really need the ideas - none of it will require planning permission. A joiner can design the new stairs for you.
I don't know any architectural technicians etc. They seem to be raved about on here but I've never come across one, not even when searching planning applications really.
I use two 'one man band' architects locally to me and neither are particularly expensive or even VAT registered.Everything that is supposed to be in heaven is already here on earth.

Not got the fees and quote back from them yet, but they said our budget was reasonable and would cover the job. Just didnt get anything from them, no great buzz or feeling or any excitement or as if they wanted the job. Does that make sense?0 -
Yes, but it isn't the world's most exciting job, in all fairness
. There isn't a huge remit for them.

it's an interesting one as you really want ideas which is generally the bit technologists or technicians aren't always the best at - did you go for smaller firms or sole practitioners? This is a system account and does not represent a real person.
