Whoever got your friend and his gf to sign a tenancy agreement is a tube and should have known better. A landlord cannot just end your tenancy by getting someone else to sign a new tenancy for the same property.
Getting back to your query about the reference....you can't compel your landlord to provide you with one. If she won't then ask the new landlord if you can provide other references.
If your deposit hasn't been protected, and I believe it should have been and still should be since you didn't end your tenancy and you don't appear to have agreed an early surrender then it's a letter before action to your landlord requesting the return of your deposit and if she doesn't comply then small claims court.
You could try negotiating with her and saying, "I know my deposit should have been protected but it wasn't. I could sue you for non-protection (up to 3 times the value of the deposit) but I won't if you return my deposit in full and provide a good reference."0 -
