Cheap motoring

Is the cheapest way to buy a car under £1000 with a years mot and run it as long as possible?

Or are some if the monthly payment schemes for a newer car worth doing?

Any advice welcome as I need a cheap to run car asap.

It so depends on the usage you are putting it to and how well you could get round unexpected breakdowns or being without a car for some time while you sourced a replacement.

There are people on here who will tell you that the sub £1000 car works well for them. Then they tell you that they do 5k miles a year, rarely venture far from home and have access to extensive public transport.

My wife's car does 20k miles a year, its usual journey is the 100 miles to London every week and then back again and if it broke down she'd lose £500+ a day in fees. Chancing it on a cheap old car simply wouldn't work for her.

I do about 5000 a year, my last car cost £650 and never broke down in four years.

Ideally want to spend 650 again but could go higher. Looking at polo lupo or corsa up to 1.4 engine. Like the Peugeot 107 but they're still quite expensive. Any other ideas?

Anything Japanese is likely to serve you well. At that end of the market I think the bargains can be in the larger cars rather than the shopping trolleys.

4 years from a 650 car means you have done very well and you could go and buy another of similar value and have a few years hassle free, On the same note you may purchase a cheap model or an expensive model and have many issues, It boils down to pot luck on cars in most cases.

Big cars is mainly where the value lies not shopping cars that are at the end of their lives. Go get a Honda Accord.

I am considering now aygo, 107, lupo, corsa, polo. Think I need a car despite liking the idea of a bike!

And please don't buy it from a dealer... At that price point you would be buying a £100 car marked up for their profit .
