I signed up for BT Infity 1 and went live this afternoon

Like most of you I'm sure the "Up To" speed means little more than hype. Does anyone ever get it.

Anyway I'm anxious to keep a check on my actual speed over the next ten days or so. Realistically what speed would you expect, and perhaps more important what speed would you drop below before you could say 'Unacceptable'; or is that like asking how long is a piece of string ?

As always thanks for your replies

Kevin

I was estimated at 68mb and actually got 73mb with Plusnet which is a part of BT.

Did you do the speed checks before ordering? Dont forget that a speedcheck is also testing the speed of the server thats doing the check also.

Can't find what they guaranteed, it was the GF who handled the call.

The package has only be Up from yesterday. With the hub connected to my laptop I'm getting a reading of
    Downstream sync speed 25.13
    Upstsream sync speed 9.75

While I appreciate there is a ten day settling in period I've no idea if this is good, bad or indifferent

  • Been having the same conversation with BT, around speeds, for over 2 months now.
Hardwired with a LAN cable I get 2.5 download and 0.93 upload. I only knew I really had a problem when I tried to watch BT Sports and every connection just dropped, continuously, and I had to reboot the router. Had a new router, no different. I was booked an engineer visit with the possibility of a £130 charge, but even then they couldn't be bothered to turn up. Shambles, I won't be going back.

As with ADSL, the signal degrades over distance, so it really depends on how far away you are from the cabinet which is providing the service.

If you are 400m from it then it is poor. If you were 1500m away then it is reasonable.

Other factors may also affect it, such as the type of cable between you and the cabinet, and your own internal wiring.

I'm on Infinity 1. Download is about 34meg and upload is about 4.5meg when tested using BTs speed tester. (Throughput ... sync speeds will be higher but I can't remember what they are, roughly 38meg and 5.5meg respectively).

I think the cable from my house to the fibre box is about 600-800m ... that's why my upload speed is fairly low with respect to Infinity 1 maximum possible, and why Infinity 2 will never be an option for me - if it was I'd be syncing at the max possible already.

Despite what people seem to think, you can't check the speed on BT Infinity (and in fact most UK ISPs).

They have a thing called traffic shaping and bandwidth throttling, which is applied to all websites and all connection (like p2p, ftp, etc, etc), EXCEPT they don't throttle bandwidth to all of the known speed test sites.

The results you get are false and not all representative of the bandwidth that BT will actually let you use.

About as honest as BTs internet service status website, which pretty much NEVER has any information, whilst their business service status (which lets not forget is all on the same infrastructure) has thousands of issues on a daily basis. You'd think their expensive premium business services would be more reliable no?

All I know is that I can download multiple Linux ISOs (cough) in parallel and get throughput speeds akin to my speed test results. :)

As said the up to is just that and very dependant upon the quality of your line and connections .#Do not test line speed over wifi. How is the router connected to the master socket ??
