Thankfully, Mozilla have got themselves sorted.
"the Mozilla Foundation launching a new company, with $3 million in seed funding, aimed at developing communications software and an ecosystem based on the Thunderbird email product, code and brand."

In essence, Thunderbird is going develop into a proper version of Outlook.
And if it's anything like the difference in class between Firefox and IE,
it's goodbye Outlook.
Unless MS want throw another couple of thousand lawyers into yet another stalling tactic.

If they got Thunderbird to connect to Exchange servers and bundled the calendar as part of it, they'd have Outlook beaten.
As there are already open source clients that connect to Exchange, and Mozilla already have a separate calendar, it shouldn't be too difficult.0
