Missed flight credit card claim

We recently missed a flight booked through sunshine holidays with Thomas cook airlines because the police closed the motorway for 3 hours to talk somebody down off a bridge. We had to book another flight at a cost of 300 quid. The insurance does not cover it and our credit card company say as there is nobody they can claim this from we can not claim under section 75. Anybody got any ideas, I did think we could claim from visa ?

You need to check the T&Cs of your credit card as to what they cover.

As the flight still went ahead I cannot see failure of supplier covering this, as they didn't fail to supply the flight, you just failed to get there.

I don't think there is anyone you can claim from, as this wasn't anyone else's fault.
  • If your insurance doesn't cover you then you've no recourse I'm afraid. Section 75 wouldn't cover because the flight was available and the supplier, TCX, did nothing wrong. Your card issuer isn't going to refund just because you missed it.

Theoretically, you could claim off the wanabe jumper - If you knew their details.
The chances of success would be less than slim though
Change is inevitable, except from a vending machine.

How come your insurance does not cover this? Missed departure cover is usually included in travel insurance: if it is not included then this should have been highlighted at the time your took out the insurance. If not then you should be able to get recourse by using your insurer's complaints procedure, if necessary taking it on to the ombudsman.

A good number of policies do not. Some don't cover missed departure at all, and where they do they only cover public transport delays and accidents and breakdowns of the vehicle the insured is travelling in. Obviously the more expensive the policy the more will be covered.
  • Quite correct Bogalot. I had to add it to mine as an extra

Its up to the person taking out the insurance to check what it covers. Even when it does cover missed departure different companies include for different circumstances. Mine only covers if its a problem with the vehicle I'm travelling in, but I was aware of that when I took it out because I read exactly what it covered before buying.

Yes I found out that Thomsons insurance does not cover missed departure at all!!
Seeing that we do a lot of airline transfers I have had to take out further insurance.
The common law of business balance prohibits paying a little and getting a lot. If you deal with the lowest bidder, it is well to add something for the risk you run, and if you do that you will have enough to pay for something better.

Earlier this year we missed a flight because a 125 mile journey by car took 5 hours instead of the expected 2.5-3 hours, due to volume of traffic. I claimed £420 under my insurance and they requested proof of incident, which I couldn't provide as it was just because of ridiculously heavy traffic.

I then wrote back asking them to please use their discretion, and they did, paying in full.

As you were definitely involved in a provable incident, maybe you could try the insurance company again, depending on why they say they don't cover missed departure.
  • Thanks all. I have looked at policies for five insurance companies and they all listed public transport fail and car accident, could not find one to cover police closing route. I had proof in photo of incident and online report of m62 closure and our car in tailback, but insurance adamant they will not pay unless the reason for missed flight is listed on policy.
