Car and Van Insurance - NCB

Hi, I have separate car and van insurances and have done for many years. Not had any claims on either.
Why is it that I can only use my NCB on one vehicle, in other words, why doesn't it build up on both vehicles?

I have had to change my car quickly, my old car was going to cost too much to repair and a family member had a car which they can't drive anymore so I have had that.
My old car was a 2001 Astra and the one I have now is 1998 Focus. The insurance quotes I had on the Focus were horrendous, like £1400 a year!!!

All the insurance companies said it was because I had another vehicle, I told them that had full NCB discount but they said it didn't count as I had the other vehicle, although none of them actually asked if I had used it on that vehicle.

If you pay two lots of insurance and don't have accidents with either, why doesn't NCB build up on both?

    You have been misled

Each vehicle does build up its own ncd

So how can a 1998 vehicle, be over £1000 to insure?
I can't remember what I pay for the van's business insurance but it is nowhere near that and the van is an old 'J' reg, a lot older than the car.
Seems ridiculous to me. I went on various comparison sites and shopped around, tried Quidco etc. Finally got it insured for just under £700, but still a lot more expensive than the older van and the newer car I got rid of.

The price if insurance is based on the risk of the driver and the type of car and many other factors. If you change car and it becomes more expensive that means the new car is statistically more likely to be involved in an accident.

Also saying you have "Full NCB" doesn't mean much. Each insurance company will have a different maximum limit so you will have a specific number of years for each policy.

So when you come to change insurance you simply need to look at your renewal documents for the vehicle you are insuring and see how many years NCB you have on that policy. You then go onto a comparison site input those amount and find the best priced insurance.

But £700 to insure a Ford Focus from what you said is very expensive!. Did you actually put in how many years NCB you had when getting a quote?

Yes Takman, I put 9 years NCB as that is the most they usually allow, I also told the companies I rang the same thing.
I can't be a high risk, I've been driving 40 odd years and that would be the same for both vehicle insurances.
My van, which admittedly doesn't do as many miles, is an old 'J' reg and only costs £322.
Nobody can believe the quotes I had for the focus but I couldn't get it any lower.
