cocked up - bought insurance I didn't need 1 year ago

hi all,

I vaguely remember a wrangle with Policy Expert this time last year trying to cancel my home insurance policy as I moved elsewhere.

However I've only just noticed that the payment was not cancelled and I was charged a lump sum for the full term of the insurance.

Is there any way I could get it back?

Thanks in advance, I'm not getting my hopes up so feel free to be brutal!

Did you have another policy - if so write to them pointing out you cancelled with them and took cover elsewhere. Send a copy of the certificate as proof you had 2 policies running and ask for a refund then take it from their reply

Otherwise if they ignored your instructions to cancel and went ahead and renewed then ask (demand) they give you a full refund for the useless policy you have discovered they took payment for.

If the money was taken by direct debit you can use the DD guarantee and get the money credited back to your account by your Bank who will sort out the issue with the rogue merchant.
  • A lot of home insurers will refund 50% of any dual insured period, on the basis that was their limit of liability.

The client will get a 50% refund from both insurers if he contact them and can provide proof of dual cover.

However, reading the OP's post he moved away, so they may have paid for a policy where they aren't living.
