Cool, thanks. I'll give Odin a go. I think I've tried everything else. :-)

On the plus side, I've installed various versions of Cyanogenmod and GApps, and got CWM and TWRP to install successfully. I see that the latest version of Cyanogenmod/Android allows you to set up the SD card for "internal storage", which should work round the problem of CM13 and GApps not being able to fit in the default internal system partition.

Oh dear. I tried using Odin to flash the .tar.mdf file ROM images via the "AP" option/button.

But both ROMs cause an infinite reboot loop. :-/

I tried another one (I9100XWLSW_I9100XEULS5_XEU.zip), and it's the same.

    Please see post #7 :)

Unless of course you're enjoying your current mental torture. :D

When I used to root my Nexus 4, I used to use Nexus Root Toolkit. This made the whole process very simple.

Don't be fooled by the name ... it works for any Android phone. :)

    Ah, thanks for reminding me!

But... are you sure it will work with my phone? When the program starts for the first time, it asks me to select my phone from a list of Nexus devices.

It also prompts for the Android build. There is an "Any Build" option, but it looks like it still only applies to the specific firmware for Nexus devices.

If I really can use the program, which device should I say I have...?

    My mental torture continues! :p

OMG! I've done it! I must've been using the wrong ROM files. I just downloaded this one, flashed it with Odin, and it worked perfectly!

So... mission accomplished, I think! Now I can have a proper play around, knowing that I can get it back to normal if needs be!

Thank you all for your help! I got there in the end! :-D
