Two week's worth of ash to be put into a bag and carried to the dustbin would be beyond people with mobility problems. It would be too heavy. Bending down to properly clean the glass likewise. Plus the fire has to be wiped clean. I had a wood burner and would never have another. Gas is so much easier, no chimney sweeping, no sourcing the wood or carrying it in from the store, no keeping the wood dry. And so it goes on.
Eventually, people will see this as just another fad such as coloured bathroom suites in the 1970s and laminate floors and decking and Belfast sinks and boiling water taps. Just cos it's fashionable doesn't mean it is practical or stylish nor that it is suitable for everyone.0 -
I think the ash problem is much exaggerated as if you are burning decent fuel there shouldn't be too much. People who don't have wood burners may not be aware that you _need_ a bed of ash for efficient burning, so you only take out enough to stop spillages. The OP does have a husband and, I dare say visitors who could help.
I've never done anything to be fashionable, but the cosyness and extremely low gas bills suit me, and the wood handling keeps me fit. If they do lose popularity it may become easier to source wood. But as you say, not for everyone.0
