Experience selling a relatively expensive car?
Hi, looking to get a new car soon but the offer from the dealer is less than satisfactory. I ran my car through Webuyanycar and it came out at the exact same figure so I guess my dealer uses that site to price check. That site seems to be for people who are desperate for a very quick sale.
I've checked out ads on autotrader and my car goes for around £4k more in private sales than the dealer has offered.
Has anyone any experience selling private for a car worth near £30k.
Do you get a lot of time wasters wanting a joyride? Whats the best way to get paid, go down to the bank and deposit there to make sure cash/bank draft is genuine etc?
Have to admit it does worry me a little but I don't want to be throwing a few grand down the drain just for the benefit of no worry.

Have you tried selling to other garages for cash? Best deals are usually from a dealer of the make of the car you are selling (e.g. sell an Audi S3 to an Audi garage). Much easier to deal with than private sales I've found in the past.0 -

I might try a different branch and tell them I'm selling not part-exing. Cheers.0 -

That should be the case but it's not in my experience at Audi. They sell at a premium but soon revert to second-hand car salesman when you're part exchanging.Mornië utulië0 -

No idea with Audi, just first make that came to mind.
In my experience, I was offered much more at a Ford garage for a Fiesta than at a local Vauxhall and VW garage. Might not always work, but generally does. Obviously you could try some independents too, but if the most expensive car a garage is selling is £5,000...I'd probably skip that one.0 -
Might also be worth trying local specialists, like a performance/german/import specialist, as they may be able to offer more.
Selling something that expensive privately via the usual channels could be a bit of a nightmare, though maybe enthusiasts clubs would work.0 -

Yes, sorry, in general terms I don't dispute your advice about going with the brand and I know a business has to make money but greed can get the better of those who profess to be doing right by the customer. And that is my experience of Audi.Mornië utulië0 -
Think you will need to use some sort of main dealer,a car at that price could never be sold private. There will need to be a warranty comes with it,your likely correct to try another Audi dealer for a sale only but I suppose it depends a lot on how popular the model is.
Most car dealers tend to be the same, when your buying off them their car is "very popular sir,I could sell a dozen of them a day",however when your selling its " Oooo, sorry sir noone wants these makes,Id have a job giving it away"....0 -
A friend had a similar problem, just bought an expensive Land Rover and was made redundant! Local dealers made very low offers.
He put it on Autotrader but first opened a new Gmail account and bought a PAYG sim card that he put in an old phone just for the add.
He sold it in two days to a trader from a long way away who came, didn't test drive and paid by bank transfer, so great result.0 -
As above, over 30k people tend to want to use finance. That said i sold my Range Rover 2 years ago for 25k(advertised) and a car dealer came out to view it, offered 24k and we done the deal!
Another option i have used for selling an expensive car is to find a garage that will sell it for you. Sold my wife's BMW this way. They have it on their forecourt, valet it, offer warranty/finance etc, they said they would get minimum amount of X for it, they actually got more for me, whilst making a profit themselves, common practice now i believe.debt free, savings in the bank0
