Default date misreported

Hello
I have an old debt on my credit report I have been trying to get cleared up once and for all. Currently equifax are showing that APEX are reporting that the account was closed in 2013 and will remain on my credit report until 2019. In reality, there were not updates (payments, etc) on this account since 2008 or 2009. Is there anything that I can do to get them to change this date back to 2008/2009 when the actual default happened or are they allowed to keep reselling this debt forever? I spoke to APEX and they said that I have to call Cabot bot Cabot is not the one on my report? I signed up with Checkmyfile to monitor and assist me and they said they can dispute it with equifax for me but they said it is quicker if I exhaust all of my efforts first. Please help
BTW - This debt has been haunting me since 2000 and I am sure that I have paid it 5x over with the interest rates and payments I made through to 2008/9
I came to this board in 2014 and followed all the advice given and then just gave up for awhile and now I am wanting to get this done once and for all. Here is my old thread https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/4907331
I am very appreciative for any advice.

Hi
If Apex were the organisation that put incorrect information on your credit file they are the ones who should correct it. If this is for the loan mentioned in your old thread, the ICO guidance says a default should be registered within 3-6 months of contractual payments being missed. If your credit file isn’t showing contractual payments being made for the last 6 years it should be fairly clear that the default was over 6 years ago. If you have any evidence on statements and payments made etc then even better.
You should make a written request to Apex informing them that you want them to correct your file, otherwise you will start a complaints process. Include any evidence you can.
If they don’t comply, use their own complaints process first. You can then escalate it to the Financial Ombudsman Service (FOS) and Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) if necessary. You could also raise a dispute with the credit reference agencies yourself.
