Skimming Quote

Options
Hi,

I've had a quote for the below and have no idea if its a fair price. It's based on two people working for 7 days but could be cheaper if they get it done quicker.

Skimming all walls and ceilings (inc boarding ceiling and new coving)

living room 11'6" x 13'7"
bedroom 13'8" x 11'7"
stairs and small hallway upstairs which I don't have the size of but its a two bedroom mid terrace

Im based in south manchester, quote is for £2,500

sounds about £60 in plasterboard for boarding, and about £70 for plaster + however much you want to spend for coving another £50-£100 perhaps.
I would seriously just do it myself... they must be seriously new to this if they can only do that area in 14 man-days, sounds about 4-5days work for 1 experienced person, heck I could even do it in 4-5days as well... It's about £1200 job with really good margins if you don't want to do it yourself..

It's actually pretty easy to learn to do it yourself and get a nice finish. I just finished about 20% smaller area and it was my first time and came out just perfect.
  • thanks for the reply krey.

To be honest, I wouldn't feel confident doing it myself as I don't have a practical bone in my body.

I had a mate quote me £900 for 6-7 days and he would be on his own but for one reason or another he can no longer do it.

I do actually know the guy who quoted for £2.5k but not that well. Just don't get why two guys would take up to 7 days when the first guy said 6-7

I think being generous is 8 days, 14 is taking the pee pee a bit. My plasterer charges £160 a day so that and materials should be £1550 max

Simple answer- It wont take them 14man-days.. they are just trying it on.
How much is worth your free time? if it is worth £200+ day than sure hire someone to do it ( but not those guys for that price/time frame), if it isn't worth £200/day than Just pull up your big girl pants and do it yourself.. It isn't that hard ,
well physically it's tiring but it's rather easy to do.
There are Tons of Youtube tutorials, that's the way I learned it myself, watched few videos, bought a good marshalltown trowel for £35/ hawk for £9 and few £1 buckets and that's all there is to it..

&in the end you will be very satisfied with yourself that you have learned a new skill and saved yourself $hitloads of £
