How does facebook really work? ;)

Yesterday, a friend posted something on FB that was IMHO quite important.
I saw it on my phone, but, as I prefer to look at 'most recent', I switched to that and .... it wasn't there.

Most odd.
Likewise, who decides which are the 'top stories'??

    Some combination of:
    - sponsored posts (i.e. paid ads)
    - people you are close to
    - subjects you are close to

So for example if you mark someone as a close friend then you are more likely to see their posts. If you interact with someone a lot then again you are more likely to see their posts.

You may have seen the occasional sets of questions from Facebook, where it asks if you prefer to see either post A or post B in your feed; responses here will also be taken into account.

    Thanks both

Still doesn't explain that when I chose 'most recent', that the most recent posts don't come in order!

'Most recent' posts has never worked properly as far as I can tell!

Brilliant - such a 'mega' system and they can't even make a simple part of it work properly!!!

Facebook don't even like you using the most recent option as it will always revert back to top posts.

Facebook's algorithms effectively supress discussion of anything controversial
